BEET GROWING EQUIPMENT

Beets

Beets are plants that belong to a family known as Chenopodiaceae. There are several varieties of these plants. These are:

Burpee Golden, Green Top Bunching, Ruby queen, Chiogga, Boltardy, Cyliondra, Early wonder Tall Top, Crosby Egyptian, Boltardy, Crimson globe, Detroit dark red and Bull’s blood.

The roots of beets are used when boiling, baking and steaming fresh greens .For them to give the best flavour, it is advisable to plant them as early as possible. There are varieties of beets with venation and stems that are red in colour. These can be consumed without necessarily being cooked.

Beets are easily affected by frequent changes in weather. Roots may have white zone rings and the quality will relatively decrease, if the weather keeps changing.

There are seeds for beets. Once planted, it can take between five to eight days for them to germinate. Beets tend to grow well in sandy soils that are well drained. A good structure of soil is imperative because good aeration of soil triggers faster growth. The soil PH can vary from 6,5 half to 7. Beets tend to grow poorly in very acidic or basic soils. This is because the element Boron, which is important during growth, is less available in such soils.

Beets are affected by many diseases. Common diseases are root rots, blights of seedlings and foliar diseases. This can result to complete rotting of roots and drying up of plants. There are various control methods that can be used for these diseases such as use of fungicide, crop rotation and treatment of seeds before the planted.

Harvesting Beets:

Usually, beets are harvested after a period of fifty and seventy days from the day of planting. They can however be harvested when deemed mature .If the plant is left to grow for a long time, they can grow into large sizes, but also become tougher.

During harvesting, the tops and roots of beets are collected. The tops, which are usually green have a unique flavour and tend to be more delicious than the roots.

Harvesting of beets is done by use of equipment such as the beet master and Matrot.

Manufacturers

The most important manufacturers of beet harvesting equipment are Gilles, Moreau, Matrol, Agrifal, Beet Master, Herriau and CMC.
